Our Environment

Bursledon Windmill, February 2008, by Paul Paxford

Hampshire Trading Standards Service recognise that the care and protection of the environment is one of the most important issues facing society today.

Because of this we take our responsibility to provide advice and guidance to business and consumers on the various environmental legislation which we enforce, very seriously.

We aim to help the consumers and business of Hampshire by ensuring:

  • retail petroleum sites follow strict safety procedures and store fuel in safe and appropriate storage facilities.
  • redundant fuel tanks are made safe to avoid any ground contamination and prevent danger to human health and safety.
  • fireworks and other explosives are legal and safely stored at registered / licensed premises.
  • detergents and other chemical products are correctly packaged and labelled.
  • the reduction of packaging for consumer products.
  • green and environmental claims are justifiable.

Our work

  • We investigate complaints from consumers and business regarding alleged excess packaging.
  • We carry out market surveillance to identify possible examples of excess packaging. We purchase samples and submit them to appropriate test houses for analysis.
  • We work with Hampshire based manufacturers, importers and suppliers to advise on how best to comply with the requirements of the regulations.
