Know Your Rights -the campaign
As part of its commitment to appropriate use of 'stops' and the safety and fair treatment of Hampshire and Isle of Wight residents, Hampshire Police Authority takes part in the national 'Know Your Rights' campaign.
'Stop and Account'
If you are asked to 'stop and account' for yourself but not searched by the police you:
will not have to give any personal information e.g. name and address
the officer will not have to fill out a detailed form
will simply be asked for your ethnic background and will be recorded so that we can ensure that the police are using their powers fairly
will receive a receipt card with the details of the officer

You can only be stopped and searched by a police officer
The Police Officer must:
have good reason to stop and search you
treat you with dignity and respect
give you a reason why you have been stopped and searched
give you their details
give you a copy of a C12 form

Stop and Search
Credit card sized leaflets are available in a number of different languages and can be downloaded from the Association of Police Authorities website or are available by contacting the Police Authority on 01962 871 595
Organisations are welcome to contact us if they would like a batch of leaflets to distribute. You can contact the Police Authority to borrow copies of the leaflet in Braille and on audio cassette which are available on loan.
Roadshows
Hampshire Police Authority runs a number of roadshow events you can either just collect a leaflet to take away or talk to a member of the Police Authority staff about any concerns or matters you wish to raise
