Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine work-based experience with training in technical knowledge and generally last between one and four years. They normally lead to a qualification, such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ); this is normally at Level 2 (or Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships.)

Apprenticeships are generally open to any age group, and can help both younger and older people into employment.

The government fully funds apprenticeship training costs for 16 to 18-year-olds and provides up to 50% training costs for 19 to 24-year-olds. It also contributes to training costs for people aged 25 years and over who meet certain criteria.

Hampshire County Council also runs its own Apprenticeship scheme across the organisation. The Corporate Apprenticeship Scheme aims to develop the skills of young residents in the county, to provide them with the very best opportunities to develop their careers and contribute to the Hampshire economy and the work of the County Council.

The Scheme has seen the apprentices working for a year across departments, including: Culture, Communities and Business Services, Chief Executives and Adult Services.

Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE 16 to 24)

The 'AGE 16 to 24' programme is aimed at helping eligible employers to offer young people employment through the Apprenticeship programme, by providing wage grants to assist them in recruiting their first apprentice.

The National Apprenticeship Service will provide up to 40,000 apprenticeship grants with a value of £1,500. The £1,500 is in addition to the training costs of the Apprenticeship Framework which are met in full for young people aged 16 to 18 and 50% for those aged 19 to 24.

Priority for funding is given to small and medium-sized employers with less than 50 employees in England but the funding is available to all small and medium-sized businesses. Companies with 250 or more employees are not eligible for this scheme.
