What types of funding are available?

There are many different funding providers out there, but here we've included the most common and relevant. Click the links below to jump to the category you'd like to learn about.

Government Funding

  • Varied, with a range of aims and eligible sectors depending on current government priorities.

  • Usually quite short time frames in which to return the bid.

Lottery Funding

28p from each £1 spent on the Lottery  goes into funding. This money is distributed by the various Lottery Distributors to projects in certain categories:

Awards for All

  • Grants between £300 and £10k to projects with a total cost of less than £25k.

  • Only community and voluntary groups eligible.

  • Relatively high "strike rate", with a broad selection of eligible activities.

Arts Council

  • Funding for projects that increase the accessibility of art.

  • A range of funding programmes, though the most relevant to most projects is Grants for the Arts.

    • Provides grants of £1-100k for arts related projects.

Big Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund is the largest Lottery distributor.  It runs a large range of various funding streams which have set themes and deadlines.

Heritage Lottery Fund

  • Funding for projects which aim to preserve the nation's heritage and increase accessibility.

  • 3 main rolling grant funds:

  • Other, more specific, streams include funding for places of worship.

Sport England

  • Exists to increase the participation and enjoyment of sport at the entry level.

  • A range of funding streams, including a Small Grants programme.

  • Projects which are concerned with nurturing young talent and giving opportunities for competition may be more suited to Sports Aid.

European Union

  • EU funding programmes run in line with the main EU budgets, with the current cycle being 2007-2013.

  • Huge variety of funding available.

  • In most cases schemes will launch a Call for Proposals when they open. Our External Funding Bulletin and newsflashes will keep members updated in these cases.

  • Some programmes require European partnership.

  • In the South East, we are not eligible for some of the large capital grant schemes.

Trusts and Foundations

There is a vast array of Trusts and Foundations that give out grants to a range of causes.  Some are high profile and give out large grants, others smaller, more localised who give out small grants.  The application process will vary with each Trust or Foundation.  Not all will have a web presence.  Although local authorities are sometimes eligible to apply, on the whole it is only registered charities or community/voluntary groups.

LEADER Funding

  • Funded by the Regional Development Programme for England (RDPE) and Defra.

  • Community based bottom-up approach that provides opportunities for local communities to identify needs and solutions by establishing Local Action Groups.
