Redundancies
Redundancies are the point of last resort for many businesses and are a route no company wants to go down. And redundancy can cost more than you think - have a look at the CIPD's redundancy formula to help calculate the real cost of redundancy to your business. There are various alternatives in terms of managing your staff more creatively - such as lay-offs and short time working . Staff expertise and skills are most needed during a downturn so business owners should try to hold off making redundancies if they want to remain efficient and be able to cope with the economic downturn. However, if you have been unable to rectify your business problems in other ways and are forced to consider making some of your workers redundant, here are some sources of help:
Job Centre Plus
Jobcentre Plus offer redundancy support including a Rapid Response service. They work with partners, such as Hampshire County Council, to support employers who are making people redundant - by helping employees to identify transferable skills, job-focused training to develop vocational skills, CV and job search support, and advice on claiming benefits.
